Report of Emergency Planning Meeting, Shropshire County Council, Wednesday 2 April 2003.

Two members of the Parish Council, Brian Iverson and David Elliott, attended this meeting which is a routine annual event though it was felt that in the present climate it was particularly relevant. There were two main speakers, one from BBC Radio Shropshire, the other from the ambulance service.

The main message from Radio Shropshire was that in the event of any emergency the best source of information for the public, in addition of course to any dedicated phone numbers for utilities etc, should be Radio Shropshire. This did not work very well during the gales and power cuts last autumn because as well as providing a poor information service to the general public the electricity companies were also unable to tell Radio Shropshire what was going on. Since then meetings have been held involving all relevant utilities, emergency services etc with the intention of making sure that it all works better next time. So one preparation everyone should make to keep themselves informed in an emergency is to have a battery powered radio to hand and to know how to tune it to Radio Shropshire.

The ambulance service presentation, also on behalf of the fire and police services, was basically a reassurance that emergency plans, formulated over many years, are constantly being updated and improved. They will ensure effective cooperation between all the emergency services and will provide access to any special equipment that might be needed.

Further information about dealing with emergencies can be found on this website:

www.bbc.co.uk/connectinginacrisis which is an initiative by the BBC to help ensure that the public has the information it needs and demands during a civil emergency.
